Join the GBDI Team!

Want to help scale sustainable building practice globally through open data and policy? Come work with us at GBDI!

We are seeking a Research Associate / Post-Doc to support future development of the GBDI Global Building Data Initiative in its subsequent phases (2025-2028).

The role focuses on the development and application of novel methods to advance the environmental modelling of global real estate portfolios and building stock dynamics, including the testing of strategies for carbon reduction and removal. Beyond this work on a global tracker for whole life carbon, the person will also have the chance to expand their global network and join us in developing the GBDI mission and projects.

We are looking for a candidate with:

  • Proven expertise in methods for life cycle assessment (LCA) of buildings and construction.

  • Experience in scientific programming (e.g., Python, R), data analysis and visualization.

  • Experience in dynamic assessment of environmental impacts, e.g. via the brightway framework.

  • Interest in supply and value chain assessment of water use, land use, and biodiversity impacts.

  • Excellent command of English (oral and written), fluency in German and/or French is beneficial.

  • A PhD degree (or otherwise substantial research and/or industry experience) in Environmental Sciences, Industrial Ecology, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related discipline.

If you don't check all the boxes... Apply anyway! If you have an interesting profile that you think would be valuable for GBDI, let us know in your cover letter.

The successful candidate will work at EPFL's Laboratory of Construction Materials (LMC) under Prof Karen Scrivener and in close cooperation with RISE Institute for Regenerative Spatial Systems, closely coordinating with GLOBE - The Global Consensus on Sustainability in the Built Environment.
