Global Building Data Initiative

The Global Building Data Initiative (GBDI) leverages data to inform industry and policy action for reducing resource use and upfront embodied carbon of new buildings.

What is the GBDI?

The GBDI aims for a global assessment of resource use and embodied carbon of new buildings. It will develop a coordinated, open, and scalable data protocol and the technical infrastructure required for global data collection and analysis.

Global Action Call

We propose a global collaboration in reshaping building design, particularly in the booming construction sectors of the Global South, where embodied carbon considerations are currently lacking.

Carbon Regulation Drive

We explore how Europe and North America's embodied carbon regulations can set benchmarks and drive transformative changes in the construction industry.

Strategic Design Impact

We highlight integrating effective building design strategies into projects to significantly cut resource use and embodied carbon, especially in new buildings.

Data-Driven Choices

We stress the importance of data on baseline resource use and carbon emissions for informed decision-making, supporting effective decarbonization and meaningful targets.

Scalable Carbon Strategies

We examine scalable strategies for embodied carbon reduction, exploring their potential to impact the construction industry's overall carbon footprint.

Stakeholder Convincing

We emphasize the critical need for a convincing toolkit providing decision-makers with essential data, knowledge, and examples to swiftly gain stakeholder support and drive ambitious decarbonization efforts.

The Global Building Data Initiative Builds on a Global Expert Community

To succeed, the Global Building Data Initiative builds on a global expert community concerned with whole life embodied carbon assessment to support industry and policy makers. The initiative will expand existing collaborations with representatives from key initiatives such as the Carbon Leadership Forum (CLF) (USA), SE2050 (USA), ECHO (USA), IStructE (UK), BECD (UK), WBCSD (Global), GABC (Global), EDGE World Bank Group (Global). Furthermore, we ensure continued high quality of our work through involvement of leading academic institutions and experts from, for example, ETHZ (CH), EPFL (CH), KU Leuven (BE), University of Strathclyde (UK), University of Washington (USA), DTU (DK).
